Noise in companies: Measurement, regulations and measures
Noise in the workplace is a serious factor that can negatively impact employee health and reduce productivity in companies. Especially in industry, where machine noise and production sounds are commonplace, precise noise measurement and compliance with legal limits are essential. But how is noise in work environments measured correctly, what legal requirements exist, and what measures help to reduce noise pollution?

Noise measurement for companies
Prolonged exposure to noise levels exceeding legal limits can lead to hearing loss, stress, concentration problems, and an increased risk of accidents. Early detection and analysis of noise pollution is therefore crucial for sustainably improving working conditions and complying with legal requirements. For this reason, companies are legally obligated to monitor noise levels in workplaces and implement appropriate protective measures.
Through a professional noise analysis from GEMAtech, you can specifically identify and implement the most effective measures – be it through organizational changes or structural soundproofing solutions such as soundproof booths and soundproof walls.
Legal limits for noise in the workplace
In Germany, the Noise and Vibration Occupational Health and Safety Ordinance ( LärmVibrationsArbSchV ) regulates permissible noise limits in the workplace. Companies must ensure that the following limits are observed:
- Lower trigger value: 80 dB(A) (daytime noise exposure level) or 135 dB(C) (peak sound pressure level)
Above this value, the employer must provide hearing protection and inform employees about the risks. - Upper trigger level: 85 dB(A) or 137 dB(C)
Above this threshold, hearing protection is mandatory, and technical or organizational measures to reduce noise must be implemented. -
ERA collective agreement noise allowance : Employers under the ERA collective agreement M+E BW must pay a noise allowance to their employees if the noise level is permanently above 82 dB(A).
Noise reduction measures
Noise cannot always be avoided in industrial work environments, but it can be effectively reduced. The best and most sustainable solutions are structural soundproofing measures such as our soundproof booths and soundproof walls:
- Soundproof booths: Reduce noise directly at the source – ideal for machines, noisy work areas or production facilities.
- soundproof walls: Stationary walls for shielding and separating noisy areas to reduce noise pollution
- Mobile noise barriers: Flexible elements for changing work areas or temporary noise protection requirements.
Methods for noise measurement
Noise measurements can vary in detail depending on the requirements:
- Preliminary noise measurement: Quick assessment of noise pollution
- Detailed noise measurement: Precise measurements with analysis of the noise sources
- Noise assessmentComprehensive documentation and advice on noise reduction
